Casino gaming on Victoria Street in Auckland means SkyCity Auckland, the CBD’s only casino, at 72–78 Victoria Street West. It offers table games and gaming machines in 20+ gaming areas, open 24/7 apart from three annual closures. If you’re heading there, you’ll need valid photo ID and a neat-and-tidy outfit.
One address, one casino
New Zealand has only six casino venues across five cities, and SkyCity runs three of them: Auckland, Hamilton and Queenstown. In Auckland, the casino has operated from the Victoria Street site since it opened on 2 February 1996. The complex stretches along the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets and includes the Sky Tower, hotels, SkyCity Theatre and bars and restaurants, with the New Zealand International Convention Centre alongside.
Casino gaming in New Zealand is tightly licensed under the Gambling Act 2003. The Gambling Commission, an independent statutory body, decides casino licences, and the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) regulates and inspects them. Pubs and clubs on other CBD streets may have Class 4 pokies, but they cannot offer casino table games.

Getting to Victoria Street West
Victoria Street West is within walking distance of most of the CBD. From Britomart (Waitematā) station it’s roughly a 1 km uphill walk. Drivers can use the SkyCity car park, with entrances on Federal, Hobson and Nelson Streets, while taxis and rideshare use 46 Nelson Street. The full breakdown, including the SkyDrive airport bus, is in our directions guide.
A note on oversight
The regulatory system isn’t just paperwork. In July 2024, SkyCity agreed to close its Auckland gaming areas for five consecutive days under a settlement with the DIA, following host responsibility failures involving a customer who gambled from 2017 to 2021. It’s a reminder to use the tools available: SkyCity’s SkyCare Breaks, self-exclusion via 09 363 6000, and free support from Gambling Helpline Aotearoa on 0800 654 655.
