A VIP casino experience in New Zealand usually means a loyalty or rewards tier that offers extras such as private gaming areas, hosts and member benefits in return for higher or more frequent play. At SkyCity Auckland, VIP gaming areas and a Poker Room exist alongside the free SHOW by SkyCity rewards programme, but detailed VIP eligibility is not published online. Online, the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 sets new limits on how licensed operators can market rewards. Whatever the setting, the important thing is to understand what a VIP status is designed to do: encourage more play.

What VIP status usually includes

Benefit What it means What to check
Private gaming areas Quieter rooms or salons, sometimes with higher table limits Entry criteria and dress code
Dedicated host A staff member who looks after your visits What the host’s role is and who to contact for host responsibility concerns
Points and rewards Points earned on play that can be redeemed How points are earned and when they expire
Hospitality Dining, events or accommodation offers Whether offers are tied to spending targets

Land-based VIP in Auckland

SkyCity Auckland is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except Christmas Day, Good Friday and 3am to 1pm on Anzac Day. You must be 20 or older to enter the gaming areas. According to SkyCity, the casino has more than 2,100 machines and 150 tables, along with a Poker Room and VIP gaming areas.

The entry point for most visitors is SHOW by SkyCity, a free rewards programme for people 20+ who are not excluded. Members earn points. SkyCity does not publish VIP tier thresholds online, so if you are interested, ask the casino directly and get the terms in writing. More on the venue is in our SkyCity Auckland casino gaming guide.

Host responsibility applies to VIPs too

In July 2024, SkyCity agreed to close its Auckland casino gaming areas for five consecutive days under a settlement with the Department of Internal Affairs, after host responsibility failures involving a customer who gambled between 2017 and 2021. The DIA identified 23 incidents of continuous play without detection. The case is a reminder that high-value customers are not exempt from harm, and that venues are expected to monitor play for everyone. SkyCity runs a “SkyCare Breaks” programme and offers self-exclusion and third-party exclusion via 09 363 6000.

Online VIP programmes and the 2026 Act

Under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, licensed operators must let customers set spending limits, cannot offer autoplay, cannot accept credit cards or buy-now-pay-later, and may only offer bonuses through direct marketing or on their own platform. Affiliate marketing and paid endorsements are prohibited for licensed operators. Unlicensed operators must stop offering online casino gambling to New Zealand customers from 1 December 2026.

If you are invited into an online VIP scheme, check:

  • whether the operator is licensed under the New Zealand regime
  • whether rewards require you to hit spending or deposit targets
  • whether withdrawal limits or wagering terms apply to VIP bonuses (see our casino bonus guide)
  • how to set or lower limits, and whether a host can override them.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Am I playing more to reach or keep a tier?
  • Have perks made it harder to walk away?
  • Would I be comfortable if family saw what I spend?
