Auckland’s city centre has one casino, SkyCity Auckland, plus a scattering of pubs, bars and clubs that host Class 4 pokie machines. The casino is a 24-hour, 20+ venue with table games and thousands of machines; the bars are smaller, 18+ and run under stricter machine limits. Here is how the CBD’s gaming options fit together, where they sit, and what to check before heading out.

The CBD gaming landscape at a glance

There are no other casinos in Auckland. New Zealand has six casino venues in five cities, and the Gambling Commission decides on casino licences.

SkyCity Auckland: the anchor of the CBD

Location

The SkyCity complex fills the block at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets, directly beneath the Sky Tower. The casino address SkyCity lists is 72–78 Victoria Street West, Auckland 1010. The New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC), which held its ceremonial opening on 11 February 2026, is part of the same precinct.

What is on the gaming floor

According to SkyCity, the casino offers “2,100+ machines” and more than 10 game types across 150 tables, including baccarat, blackjack, poker and tai sai. There is a dedicated Poker Room and VIP gaming areas. For a closer look at each, see the SkyCity casino gaming area guide and the SkyCity pokies guide.

Door rules

  • 20+ only for the gaming areas, with ID checks.
  • Open 24 hours, 7 days, except Christmas Day, Good Friday and 3am to 1pm on Anzac Day.
  • Neat and tidy dress. No hi-vis, gang insignia, sleeveless tops on men, or torn clothing. Hats and sunglasses are only allowed in the Poker Zone (or for religious or medical reasons, in the case of hats).

Around the precinct

The complex also includes SkyCity Hotel, The Grand by SkyCity and Horizon by SkyCity, the SkyCity Theatre, and a range of bars and restaurants. The Sky Tower’s observation decks and SkyJump sit above it all, so the casino often shares foot traffic with tourists and conference visitors.

Class 4 pokies in the central city

Outside SkyCity, CBD pokies are found in pubs and bars that host machines on behalf of gaming trusts (corporate societies). The trust owns and operates the machines, and the net proceeds must go to authorised community purposes such as sports clubs and charities.

Key differences from the casino:

  • Lower stakes: under current Class 4 rules, the maximum stake per play is $2.50.
  • Smaller prizes: the maximum prize on a single play is $500, and linked jackpots are capped at $1,000.
  • Hours: set by each venue, so don’t assume late-night access.
  • Fewer machines: a typical gaming room is small compared with a casino floor.

We don’t name individual bars here, because which CBD venues still operate machines changes over time. If you want to know whether a specific bar has pokies, call ahead or ask at the bar.

Why the number is falling

Auckland Council runs what it calls a “sinking lid” policy for Class 4 venues. According to the council, when a venue closes no new consent is given to replace it, venues cannot increase machine numbers, and existing venues cannot move from one part of the city to another. Over time, that shrinks the CBD’s pub pokie footprint. The Auckland CBD pokies guide covers the local picture in more depth.

Getting around the CBD gaming area

For step-by-step routes, see directions to SkyCity Auckland. Check current timetables with Auckland Transport before travelling late at night.

Choosing between the casino and a local venue

People pick one over the other for different reasons:

  • Atmosphere: the casino is large, busy and open all night. A bar’s gaming room is quieter and usually attached to a drinking or dining area.
  • Game range: if you want table games or poker, SkyCity is the only CBD option.
  • Limits: Class 4 machines have hard caps on stakes and prizes. Casino machines are not bound by them, which can mean faster spending on higher-denomination machines.
  • Age: 18 and 19 year olds can play Class 4 pokies but cannot enter the casino.

Whichever you choose, the long-run maths is the same: pokies return less than they take over time. Set a spending limit before you leave home and stick to it.

Host responsibility and help in the CBD

All gaming venues in New Zealand must have harm minimisation measures in place. SkyCity runs a “SkyCare Breaks” programme and offers self-exclusion and third-party exclusion through 09 363 6000. Class 4 venues must also offer self-exclusion if you ask. An exclusion order can last up to two years and applies per venue, so you would need to exclude from each venue you use.

In July 2024, SkyCity agreed to close its Auckland casino gaming areas for five consecutive days as part of a settlement with the Department of Internal Affairs over host responsibility failures. It is a reminder that venues are expected to notice and act on harmful play.
